Powerboat Coxswain

Description:

The course provides a blend of theoretical instruction and practical exercises in various environmental conditions designed to prepare the participant to safely take charge of a powerboat in coastal waters.

Course Outline:

  • Preparation for sea and preparation of the boat
  • Launching and recovery
  • Boat handling
  • Securing to a buoy
  • Anchoring
  • Leaving and coming alongside
  • Man overboard
  • Towing and being towed
  • Night operations
  • Bad weather operation
  • Emergency procedures
  • Communications
  • Ropework
  • Safety equipment and safety of the crew
  • Collision avoidance rules
  • IALA Buoyage
  • Local laws and regulations
  • Availability and interpretation of weather information
  • Use of charts, and nautical publications including tide tables
  • Use of compass for steering and position fixing
  • Planning a coastal passage
Entry Standards:

This course is open to any person who may be in charge of a powerboat.
Minimum number of participants is three (3) and the maximum is twelve (12).

Duration:

5 days (40hrs)

Certification:

A certificate of successful completion shall be issued to those participants who successfully complete the course and meet the assessment criteria.
