Safety Seamanship Course
Description:
This course aims to provide knowledge, guidance and skills in safe working practices to those working on board merchant ships.
Objectives:
Trainees who successfully complete this course should be aware of and have had practice in implementing safe working practices in operations that are considered hazardous on board merchant ships.
Course Outline:
- The code of safe working practices for merchant seamen
- Permit to work systems
- Practical aspects of risk assessment, job safety and hazard analysis
- Personal health and safety
- Personal Protective Equipment
- Safety officials
- The meaning of safety signs and signals
- Workshop safety, hand and power tool safety
- Safe Means of Access
- Safe rigging and operation of pilot ladders, ladders, gangway and accommodation ladders
- Safe movement around vessels with reference to hatches, holds, tanks and watertight doors
- Confined space entry and rescue
- Working aloft at heights and outboard
- Mooring and anchoring operations
- Safety during mooring and snap back zones
- Safe handling of ropes, wires and tug lines, correct use of rope and chain stoppers
- Lifting, rigging and slinging
- Examination, testing and markings on lifting equipment
- Safe lifting, rigging and slinging
- Hand signals used during lifting operations
- Manual handling operations
Entry Standards:
This course is open to serving seafarers.
Maximum number of participants is twelve.
